Go to a website called iobit.com. They have a free version of their Advanced Windows Care which is good for an overall cleanup of your computer. It also covers adware and immunity features which you cannot always get in an all in one programs.
Try these. They work and they are free:

Run the tool and then download the free spyware and virus protection programs:

Malicious virus removal tool:

Ad-Aware Free download:

AVG Download free

Yahoo Toolbar has good pop-up blocker:

Good Luck
All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

Spybot - Search %26 Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S%26D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Windows xp pro...initial loading can take 30 mins from switching on ...this after a power failure?

Run chkdsk with fix error option, it seams hard drive got messed up.

Windows xp pro...initial loading can take 30 mins from switching on ...this after a power failure?computer security

the biger the hardrive, and ram ,the longer it takes to load up sometimes i think that ten minutes is too long
if it takes that long to bootup its usally due to some sort of system critical error and its trying to relocate the information to bootup.

try reinstalling xp and that should resolve the issue.

If its after a power failure its just double checking everything and probably running a chkdsk to ensure that all the files are where they are supposed to be.

If you are getting more adware and spyware you need to check your settings and see what you have allowed and blocked, and also run anti-spy scans, no firewall program "blocks spyware" it only blocks posible intrusions and software from loading/installing when you don't want it to.
Your best bet is to try and restore your system back to the day before the power failure. If this does not work then you will need to identify what program or process is hanging up. Use a startup manager to remove all startups and then add them back methodically to identify the problem.
You know this is a good question and I like a tough one like this. The NTLDR is the one that has to search for the Operating system take a look at the partition once you get booted up. Go into disk managment and take a peek at it.. I bet that doesnt look right at all. Check out what NTLDR means do a google search. Good luck
better to reinstall your XP
WOW That is forever!

Did you buy and install the software on your own?

Is your hard drive big enough for this program? Our you trying to run this program on a p3? I noticed one of our p3's have windows xp home edition and it runs funky.

We have windows xp pro on two of the other computers with no problems....

Why not go through your system manually to see if there is a virus that (as good as zone alarm is) still got through?

How much room is left on your hard drive?

Well this is all the ideas I can come up with for you to check at the moment....good luck with your problem.

Hard Drive Question!?

I've been noticing over the last couple of weeks that the space on my hard drive is slowing decreasing by 0.1 Gb nearly everyday. I haven't installed anything lately and I move all the pictures, videos, and music I download onto an external hard drive that I bought specifically for that purpose because I have a relatively small internal hard drive. I run a spyware/adware/virus check once a week and nothing has shown up. My question is...Do I have programs updating that aren't telling me or do I have a more serious problem??? Thanks for all your help!!!!

Hard Drive Question!?antivirus

Run disk cleanup in system tools. Cleans junk.

Make sure all boxes are ticked in cleanup.

And the spyware/adware/anti virus updates run daily. They add a little. But disk cleanup will keep it clean.

Right click my computer then system restore and move the slider to 5% or even 3%.

It will remove the oldest restore point when making a new one.

System restore uses the amount of space you have allocated in system restore setup

Hard Drive Question!?computer

What you are seeing is System Restore gobbling up your hard drive space. You know it keeps making back up restore points that eat up hard drive space. A useful Windows utility? - at times but as you can see it will cause problems as well - more frequent defrags of the hard drive - after cleaning spyware - System Restore will often restore the spyware with a reboot. Personally - I shut it off on my computer. Right click My Computer - properties - System Restore tab - uncheck.
Try searching for a utility called CCleaner. This cleans out all the unwanted files easily and will restore your drive space.
Cleanup temporary internet files/system restore files.

Get ccleaner
The best solution I found was to use a program called ccleaner.

This will let you see many hidden files, but you need to be a little careful about what you delete - it will do no harm, but you can delete everything from your hibernation file, chkdsk fragments, and even history of windows downloads and installer files.

It is free, and will do a lovely job of tidying up your registry. Something else - remember to leave your system to do a complete defrag when you finished cleaning it up. I started with a 320GB harddrive a few months ago, and wow - not too long after that I had a shock, and ccleaner safely removed a ton of rubbish.

I bought two computers, one has the basic software......?

that it came with and I gave it to my mom. The other has lots of additional software loaded on it and I have access to the internet.

Due to viruses and spyware/adware/malware, my computer now has corrupted files which cannot be accessed or I have deleted. I know how to remove the additional software that I have loaded, so that I can reinstall it later. When the two computers were purchased they were identical, so the only difference is the added software. But I have two questions: How can I use the DOS command "copy c:\ a:\" to copy all the files in the multi-layer directories without having to go through all the layers and copy each directory separately? And if this is impossible or too difficult, how can I link them via cable to copy the one's contents to the other? (I don't have the Windows Installation disc or it wouldn't be a problem.) I have found a reputable computer support business that is local and they will do it for $119 if I provide the driver files.

I am assuming you are wanting to do a

C:\%26gt;copy c:*.* a:

?

A: being the location of the directory you are wanting to copy information to?

I have never wanted to copy from the DOS prompt though, I have always just created a Network Connection with share priveleges and used a Crossover Cable for just 2 boxes, or used a hub to connect the two computers.

Why can't i open some web sites?

i downloaded avg and adware, i still can't access some sites. esp government sites and some others in my favorites....why can i access some and not others....i never had this trouble before, all sites in my favorites were accessable.....

check your security settings for different internet zones.

2. Download Firefox from www.mozilla.org/firefox

and try. You can switch to IE with the add-on IETab

It is advisable to have another browser to locate a problem.

Spyware/Trojan Problem?

my computer says it has been infected with spyware/trojan. and adware popups keep appearing. i have a firewall that's on, mcaffee and we also have zone alarm (not installed on the computer). what do can i do to get rid of this virus?

Spyware/Trojan Problem?cafe racer

You need an anti-spyware. I would suggest a full scan with:

SUPERAntiSpyware:

http://www.superantispyware.com/

Get the free version.

good luck.

Spyware/Trojan Problem?free anti virus

you'll probably have to boot with a emergency cd and scan (and remove) the virus. hopefully mcafee can remove it. If not, hopefully it will identify it and you can search some of the virus scanning websites to find one that will; download it and have it remove it.
You poor soul-

First what you need to do- is go into control panel, and turn off "SYSTEM RESTORE"- This will ensure that no backed up copies are embedded in the restore files.

No that you have done this click start - run - then type REGEDIT-

Now click on th plus sign next to "H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"

now scroll down and look for "SOFTWARE"- and once there- look for the names of the types of spy ware software that you use - once you do- delete them.

Not all anti-spyware programs catch all spyware. It is best to have a couple anti-spyware programs installed. Download and install Spybot from http://www.spybot.com It is free. Restart your computer and login as Safe mode. Hit the F8 button upon restarting then select Safe Mode from the list. Once logged in, run the anti-spyware program.
Lookup one of the many posts on viruses/spyware and find one that explains how to reformat your computer.
Download and update then run ad-aware from lavasoft.com then download firefox and use it instead of IE you'll get a lot less pop ups
First things first. You need to detect which virus is making havok in your pc.
