I read about the software in an answer to someone else's question about tax prep. I'm wondering whether is good, legitimate software or some sort of scam/spyware/adware.

yes, it's a free program with no spyware. (in the online version they ask you repeatedly to buy the state version and other add-ons but just answer no) You should still review the questions and compare the return with last year's tax return.

I've used TaxAct on line for 2 years now. Seems legit.
oh man i just finished with them they were great
they are free but as dave said make sure to answer no to
the taxact delux ofer i answerd yes and at the end in order to print or file they said i have to pay 9.95 for enabiling delux...
