Completely stop all viruses, adware, and spyware: switch to linux.
My advice is don't open any odd looking emails, make sure all software you install contains is trustworthy, don't go to porn sites (those are usually infested with viruses), get a firewall and anti-virus program. Also make sure you know how to use them, because if you don't they really are useless. It's like having a gun, but you don't know how to turn the safety off. I use Norton Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm Firewall, these work great. I 've been using them and haven't had one virus for more than a year or two.

okay, let me start from the beginning. When I scanned my computer for spyware/adware Spybot S%26D found two: Virtumonde and Smitfraud-C. Toolbar 888. However, when I tried deleting them, a warning sign pops up and says, "some problems couldn't be fixed; the reason could be that the associated files are still in use (in memory). This could be fixed after a restart. May Spybot S%26D run on your next system startup?" I've tried this 3 times and it hasn't done any good. I've also scanned my computer with AVG anti virus, and full scanned with Ad Aware Se personal. Help is much appreciated.

Hey. Let me get you caught up.

I work in a dealership and my coworker (who I dont really enjoy) caught a trojan virus on his computer. Along with about 38 other viruses and close to 300 adware and spyware. My boss asked me to clean it up and asked me privately if it was porn. I said i didnt know. Well today I was finishing cleaning it up and of course... I found adult friend finders and the like. Now this not only makes me really uncomfortable at my job, being a teenage and my co-worker being in his late 40's/50's but I also don't know how to approach my boss with this information.

How would you handle it and what should I do to make sure Im not in any danger. Usually its just me and him at the workplace. Thanks in advance for your help.

As has been said, AFF cookies can be picked-up from any number of "non-adult" sites. If he's ever visited Lavalife for one site, he could have caught it there.

Simply typing in his e-mail account on a seemingly innocuous website, or if he sends his e-mail address as an active link in his outbound e-mails, there are bots that can grab them and use them to send e-mails to from "inappropriate" or even fraudulent sites.

The presence of the trojan and ad/spyware muddies the problem. You will have to check the activity logs in the company's server (if any), or on the computer itself to see how much time...and when...he was on the sites in question. Make sure you print the logs. Also make sure you find and remove all "Shadow" (aka "Slave") programs. They can allow anyone with the Master to call-up the computer's IP address and dowload files or execute programs without you knowing about it.

Warning:Unresponsive Script Popup?

I feel pretty certain that it has to do with mozilla and not spyware or adware. Reason being is that I got it alot on my old laptop and I thought that it was spyware causing it. But then I got my new laptop and it stated doing it right away. Plus nothing comes up on norton. So it has to be something with mozilla. If you use G-mail, just create a filter.

If you have an operating system disk, you can format and re-install. Be sure to do a full format as some spyware has been known to stay resident (and active!) even after reinstallation of the OS.

Ok, when it comes down to this, you could just try and switch to Linux (Linux is virus free!!!). Download something like Ubuntu Desktop edition (free Linux system) and burn it to a disk, then you can stick the disk in and reformat your hard drive, thus deleting everything off your system and starting fresh. If you want to save files, then but a large flash drive, (one or two gigabytes will do) and then put your files on it.

Okay, since u want good paid one, use Zone Alarm Security Suite which has Firewall(best), antivirus, antispyware and many more things 2 protect pc. Zone Alarm Firewall( only) is free, Anyway there are great free antispywares like Spybot and AdAware SE. They are pretty good too. (never use Norton, it is a resource hog though good) AdAware SE is free. Its paid version has just realtime protection added. Spybot(including realtime protection) is completely free. Spyware Doctor has a free version that has only realtime protection, which means it cannot remove existing threats but screen coming ones. Its paid version has both enabled. Hijackthis is a great free tool, for those who know computers. If u don't know much, don't use it, it'll mess things up.

Using Zone Alarm firewall will enable u control incoming hazards as well as programs accessing outside network from your computer. So it is a must with P2P networks running.

Try removing the P2P networks in windows safe mode(press F8 during startup). It's more effective.

Look through the add/remove programs list and remove anything suspicious. Also look through the programs folders.

Delete that stuff and never worry. It was placed there by an illegitimate program in the first place. I f by chance your normal progs don't work you can reinstall.

YES. as a rule of thumb your virus scanner only quarantines items for you to be able to esasily restore if you need to.

as a rule you should after a malware scan restart your system, then check that all programs are working normally (only if malware is found). if a program reports an error you may find that the file is in the quarantine file.

if no errors are found with your system after a restart then you can safely delete files from the quarantine location.

rescan your computer. now if any malware is found then delete it, if not restart your stystem then for good measure repeat the scan again. if no errors or malware found then you can safely run your system as normal.

good practice should be to check for updates to your virus definitions files at least once a day. once your update has been downloaded and applied you should run a full system scan for malware.

My computer takes to log to start when i turn it on. It starts but it takes a while for anything to function. It first doesnt show my desktop icons and only my wallpaper and then Start Taskbar is visible. I'm sure that there is not adware, spyware or any virus on it so what else could it be?

If you have more than 5 items checked, you have way too many things starting up when your computer starts. Uncheck items like itunes, quicktime and stuff like that. You don;t need them running in the background. Just leave your video and AV software on.

Take some of the stuff off your desktop... and check your startup menu. If you have Norton it uses a HELL of a lot of system resources on startup
go to start%26gt; run%26gt; msconfig%26gt; startup, and remove all the programs (not the system files or antivirus programs). This should not affect your programs (you will still be able to run all programs on your computer), and trust me it will speed up your startup time.

ive looked these proceses up and it turns out that they are by the microsoft corporation, but they are also registered as trojans.

ive done tests with: avg, spybot, add protect, adware se, and have cleaned the system with ccleaner. they picked up some viruses and stuff but the problem is still there.

the problem is that after i connect to the internet (broadband) the hour glass is always there and the cpu usage is at 100 %.

after about 30 mins of connection the comp comes to a complete halt coz it cant take the crap.

i cant reinstall my OS coz i dont have the cd.

im on windows xp

and there 5 SVCHOST.EXE running at the same time and one of them takes most of usage

SVCHOST is not a trojan it is a micro soft program that takes care of comp start up, try going into task manager, processes the let your comp sit for like 10 mins, if SVCHOST is still taking above 10 CPU then you have a prop. Now why the heck you have 5 i don't know, that's just weird, just NEVER end either program, cause both are vital to run your comp, but try (i dont know what this might do so be careful) killing the 4 that aren't taking up CPU usage, if something goes wrong just restart. Why does Internet Explorer Freeze on home page?

My 3 month old computer keeps freezing when I open up IE on my home page. I can get into My Documents and things that aren;t internet related, but it always freezes on my home page and won't let me go any further. I had someone help me with Adware and Spyware, but under task manager/processess it had IE running at 99%? No one can figure out what the problem is. I addedd more memory and it didn't help. It seemes it started after our McAfee and Norton ran out of free trial. It shows we are protected though for virus protection. Help.

Webwatcher is a Keylogger program. Keyloggers are legal. How it is used may be legal or illegal. If your husband installed this to monitor your computer it is certainly unethical.

It is perfectly appropriate to install a Keylogger to monitor a childs use of the computer. It is not appropriate to use one to monitor another adults computer use. Doing this is a sign of a "Control Freak".

Because Keyloggers are legal the Security programs usually ignore them. Some Keyloggers are classified as Rogue programs. This is based on whether to provide all the promise, how the are promoted and other factors. Security companies usually allow their programs to detect Rogue programs.

The problem with Webwatcher is it is not classified as a Rogue program.

Another problem with detecting Keyloggers is they are designed to be very secretive. They are hidden in areas of your computer that do not get scanned when the scan is done in the "normal mode" the computer operates. Opening these areas allow the programs to scan them and hopefully remove the keylogger.

Another method you can use to find it is check the Processes in Task Manager. The best way to do this is use a program like WinTask Pro. This will look at each running process and tell you what program uses it.

I just got a trojan adware.w32.expdwnldr virus which keeps popping up a system alert saying I have to pay for anti spyware to fix it. I know this is a hoax because i have 2 programs called xoftspy se, and registry cleaner that i scanned and removed all trojan and other viruses. It still comes up! Also a large wallpaper in red that has a poison sign that says your privacy is in danger! and you need to install privacy protection software now. I've read that people have downloaded and removed it with spynomore, but when i try to remove the items after i have scanned them it says i need a license code. I once couldn't get it to work, it was that i replaced it with process explorer and then deleted it(process explorer) form the hard disk. I re installed it and set it not to replace the task manager. if the problem is other one then process explorer can also help

Try booting from your Windows XP disk and try doing a repair. If that doesn't work, boot up Windows and backup any data you don't want to lose and then reinstall XP.

Both ad-aware and spybot search and destroy is very excellent,but from my experience i noticed that spybot will detect sometimes many application u use as a spyware especially all shared or p2p programs like kazaa,edonkey,and imesh.....some times i feel it's not completely save with some applications,so u use ad-aware better as it's very intelligent.
This may seem complicated, but you are going to need both and maybe even a third spyware software.

Spyware software go by a signature file that tells them if your computer is infected or not.

Actually, the hosts file is to keep people from browsing into certain IP addresses and send them somewhere else. I use this method in order to block certain people's kids from myspace when they're not smart enough to use a proxy. You don't really "block spyware/adware" sites. It's just to keep you from browsing into them. You can edit the hosts file yourself with msword.

Try a different browser like Firefox, as, contrary to your insistence, something had your old browser in its grips, and if it is IE, well, that is not surprising. But don't try to uninstall or reinstall it as it is integrated into the system. You could try to update it, that may work. Everyone has a geek friend, ask them to take a look at it. Its probably spy ware. I would suggest running your computer in safe-mode with networking and run your anti-virus just to make sure that it isn't one of those hard to detect viruses. If it is not one of those you can try downloading some free spy-ware software, but I don't recommend it because many times they are spy-ware as well. If you don't mind paying I suggest buying defender pro for about $20 its cheap but it does keep your computer free from viruses and spy-ware not to mention some other handy stuff.

Try downloading Spyware Terminator and run a scan with it. According to PC World tests, Spybot - Search and Destroy perfomed the absolute worst and detected only 20% of malware. ST performs much better in my personal tests.

But unless you build your own computer and install the operating system it will probably come "bundled" which is just an excuse to load it with spyware and adware. YES! I ended up paying for a service to set it up. Then, I think you need to learn how. Once they did set it up, I thought it was turned on and it was hacked several times. Thought I was good then went back to my first passwords and found that there was activity when I was not even in town. Adware definately if you bought it from a retailer who made sure you got a 'special software starter package' pre-loaded on the hard drive.
If the computer is new and has not been used before there is no way that it would come with viruses impregnated into a new and unused disk. Monitoring, however, can happen right from the start, from your servers, it has happened and it does happen, or the ones who supply your operating system, or through updates etc. If you feel strong that someone is playing with your computer or followes your movements and responds in the things you do, I would look in that direction.

I am not sure why you would ask such a question, unless you sensed something like that happening.

Yahoo messenger 8 totally ruined my PC?

I downloaded it because a friend of mine wanted to talk on there. After I realized how bad it was I went to uninstall it. After I hit the uninstall button everything froze the computer shut down and restarted by itself. After it came back on a lot of my desktop items where missing including my recycling bin this is the SAME exact thing that happen when I got a trjoan horse in my computer 2 years ago. Now of course I didn't think that Yahoo would infect my computer because its Yahoo why would they. But after that messenger kept popping up and I even went into the C:// drive and deleted the folder and its still there. And then I did system restoration so I can restore most of my programs and all the adware crap is still here. Any tips??

If you accidently stop something you do not wish to stop then go back and change it. If you did not get the yahoo to stop then go back and recheck it.

I have a Windows XP computer running a mix of Avast anti-virus, adware se personal, spybot S%26D, and I got hit with a password switchover Avast scan did not pickup anything. I get locked out of the computer when screensaver kicks in.

I am able to get in after the computer has been off for a while and QUIKLY enter the original password as a one shot deal.

However It will not let me change the password claiming that the original password is not the password that is in use. What do I do I am the computer security administrator. Also a phony limited account was also created that did not show up in the welcome screen I deleted it but as for wether it is still there or not I do not know.

you might be having recovery console CD.put that CD when u start ur system.so far as i know its not a bios level hack dont worry abt it.it will ask for the new password enter the new one and when u get entry to ur system just find the registry entry for the exe (that someone has sended to ur machine)dot worry delete any of the entry of that software.it wont work after that now change the password again.

reastart the machine and change the password once more..........

Why do people bother using AIM?

I honestly don't understand why people in the U.S. want to use AIM. Everywhere else in the world, practically everyone uses Windows Live Messenger or Y! Messenger. Windows Live Messenger beats out AIM in many ways:

1. You can play games - and they're really great games too. It's so fun. The ones on Yahoo! kind of suck and take too long to load

2. The ads don't pop-out - On AIM they do sometimes. On Yahoo, they're ok. They need ads, or else it's hard to keep up the costs of maintenence for the messenger

3. Webcam chats actually work on WLM - they work very nice, and more cams are compatible with it. On AIM, it just takes too long, and on Yahoo! it's pretty tough to find compatibility sometimes

4. It's not AOL - the last time I remembered, AOL was the least favorite company we can all think of. I mean doesn't anbody remember the yucky adware it installed in your computer?

5. Status messages - you can type your own personal message, and have lots of options of being away, (cont.)

Where ever you see the name 鈥減esky鈥?below, you will need to insert the actual name of the file/software/virus, etc. that you are trying to remove.

Without details, you can`t get much help. There are various kinds of viruses, with different effects or damages done.

First of all, are you really sure that your PC is infected with a virus? What`s the sign? As for Norton, have you downloaded the latest update? Unless you have critical data on your hard drive, reformatting is also a considerable option. But make sure you know what steps to take after that, including preventing future virus or adware infection.
The best thing to do is boot up in safe mode, find the virus, then delete it. that should solve the problem.

The only disadvantage of the Windows Firewall is that it doesn't block any outgoing traffic, unlike the free Zonealarm firewall. If you have a trojan installed on your computer, it will still be able to access the Internet because it's outgoing traffic in the eyes of Windows Firewall. However it surely gives you good protection against web attacks.

Download AVG Antivirus from Grisoft, Ad-Aware from Lavasoft, Spy-bot Search and Destroy from downloads.com, and Microsoft's Windows Defender Beta 2 Ver. from Microsoft. All of these are free programs and do an excellent job. Do update Windows often. Do update all of these utility programs I've mentioned here, and do run them often. Don't open e-mails from unknown people or companies. Don't visit Sex web sites. Do read the manual that came with your computer.
