My yahoo instant messenger will not let me log into my account and message people. What is wrong?

I have tried repeatedly to uninstall and re-install yahoo instant messenger but it is still not working. I don't know anything about proxies so i don't have them. I have run full system scans to try to remove any existing viruses or adware but it is still not allowing me to log into my messenger at all.
