Nope, it won't correct the problem and nope it won't ruin your hard drive (probably).
Take it to a computer technician/retail store.
To address what people below me are saying:
If the virus has already gotten to the point where you are getting a blue screen of death or system messages telling you that you have a virus, Norton, Mcaffee, Spybot or whatever else you guys are recommending are not going to get the job done.
The removal process generally involves using some other programs in safe mode, or during a worst case scenario, deleting the partition with the virus, reformatting the hard drive, and reinstalling the OS.
The reason I didn't recommend it is because it's a fairly technical process and it can get difficult if you don't know what you're doing. Furthermore, if you just play around with the computer without knowing what you are doing, you run the risk of pushing the damage to the point where you may not have any other choice but to reformat. You would be amazed at how many customers of mine have deleted registry files, .sys and .dll files, and other vital components in an uneducated attempt to fix it themselves.
