I have 6.846 MB/s Downstream but files download @ 16kb/s?

I have BT Total broadband which runs up to 8MB/sec currently @ 6.8MB/sec but files only download with a speed of 16kb/s Max.. Upload rate is 448kbits/Sec.. I have run spybot, no Adware/Spyware etc. Virus Scan no viruses... Would BT slow down my downloads if I have capped my 40GB limit. But surely they would lower my downstream rate.. Whats wrong? Can anyone help me pls....

Your download speed depends on the host ( computer ) you're downloading from.

If you've chosen to download from a very busy host, or one that has poor uplink speed there's nothing you can do about it.

By the sound of it you'tre using filesharing software.

Bear in mind that lots of people using this deliberately limit the bandwidth that the software can UPLOAD files at so that their connection remains useable for other purposes.

Of course their could be so many hosts connected to one server that the server has shared out the available upload bandwidth amongst all those connected.

As a test, go to http://www.microsoft.com/download and download anything thats a few MB in size.

You should see something like 4-800Kb per second download speeds reported in the Windows download dialogue. If you don't, check several times at different times of day and with different files.
